Butō is a dance oriented towards the unknown; when the dance begins at the point of crisis – what appears as an impasse, a void or rupture opening before us – becomes the ground upon which we dance. Here begins an unfolding and a transformation of consciousness in movement. At the core of butō’s philosophy of transformation are images and techniques of the imaginary. Cultivating and experimenting with these techniques is the work of a lifetime; in this workshop we will explore some of these methods of ‘dancing through phantasmata.’

I am a dancer whose art is grounded in butō, or dark dance, which I have practiced since 2002. My work is an ongoing inquiry into the body and movement, an archaeology and poietics of the flesh.

With Peter Grey I co-founded and run Scarlet Imprint, an independent press publishing works on contemporary occult thought and practice. I have performed, given workshops and spoken on my practice at events, conferences and research seminars in the UK, Europe and the United States. Selected works from 2008 to 2018 are published in The Brazen Vessel (SI, 2019).
