The Veiled Atelier: Where the Hidden Finds Its Shape

My work explores the threshold between myth, ritual, and artistic embodiment through masks, puppets, and wearable figures. These creations are not static objects but living artefacts, designed to come to life in the hands of performers. A centerpiece is the two-meter dragon puppet, a symbol of transformation and the bridge between visible and invisible realms. Alongside it appear masks such as Cernunnos, the horned god, the Ash Bird born from a dream after loss, and the Serafin Wings, recalling angelic and ecstatic visions. Each piece carries its own spirit, shaped by traditional craftsmanship and modern techniques, from woodcarving to silicone casting. Together, they form a dialogue between cultural memory and individual myth, inviting audiences to encounter the magical and the unseen not as relics of the past, but as vital presences in the present.

Bio

Beatrice Baumann is a stage and costume designer, puppet and mask maker whose work moves between theatre, myth, and the unseen. Educated at the HfBK Dresden, at DAMU Prague under Prof. Petr Matásek, and at HFF Babelsberg (diploma in Animation Film), her artistic path has always united vision and craft. She creates masks, figures, and objects as vessels through which forgotten stories and hidden forces may take form. Often shaped by dreams, rituals, and archetypes, her works explore the threshold where material becomes animated—whether on stage, in stop-motion film, or as independent creations. Traditional methods such as woodcarving merge with contemporary techniques using silicone and other experimental materials, allowing her to build figures that seem to breathe with their own presence. Since 2019 she has been working as a professional puppet maker in theatre, alongside her independent projects under The Veiled Atelier – Where the Hidden Finds Its Shape.
