Quimbanda: Working with the Magic of Exu and Pombagira
In this presentation, I will offer an introductory overview of Quimbanda, an Afro-Caribbean religion with syncretic and initiatory roots, and then delve into its magical and operational structure. After a brief historical overview, I will focus on the beating heart of the tradition: the direct, tangible, and transformative relationship with the spiritual entities known as Exu and Pombagira.
These forces, deeply connected to both the symbolic and literal crossroads of existence, act as mediators between the visible and invisible worlds and form the core of magical work within Quimbanda. I will explore the ritual framework through which these spirits are invoked and sustained — including the personal altar, pontos riscados (magical sigils), and offerings — with particular attention to the dynamics of pacts, ritual possession, and spiritual ascent as mediated by the relationship with these entities.
The aim is to show that Quimbanda is not merely a cult of spirits, but a complete magical system, grounded in a coherent cosmology and a precise symbolic language, in which contact with Exu and Pombagira becomes an initiatory path, a mirror of the unconscious, and a tool for deep personal transformation.
Bio
Artist, Papabokor of the 21 divisions of Voodoo, Kimbandero, Doctor Hoodoo, founder of “La Società dello Zolfo” and director of the Italian Esoteric Tarot Academy.
Half of Yezidi descent, he began to be interested in the world of the occult and esotericism at a young age, driven by his mother’s interest in mediumistic phenomena.
For about twenty years he has focused his research on witchcraft, in particular Italian witchcraft and that linked to Afro-Caribbean traditions and on the various divination systems used over time.
In 2022 he founded the “Sosyete Lakwa de Viento y Fuego”, the Italian group of Voodoo of the 21 divisions with the first official Temple (Hodie Temple), and the Crossroad Club, a group linked to the Traditional Hoodoo practices of Louisiana.
In close contact with Anthropologists, Magicians, Houngan and Mambo and ritual groups around the world, he continues his research on Voodoo, Tarot and witchcraft, and holds conferences on the 21 Divisions in Italy and abroad, to make this tradition known and clean it from what the Media has tried to erroneously transmit.
