This is Chaos
Join us for a presentation of the original illustrations created by Hagen von Tulien for the seminal book „This is Chaos“, edited by Peter J. Carroll – one of the foundational thinkers of the Chaos Magic movement.
This presentation offers a rare glimpse into the visual language of Chaos Magic, as envisioned by Hagen von Tulien. On display will be the full series of illustrations as featured in the book, alongside previously unseen variants and alternate compositions, providing deeper insight into the creative and esoteric process behind the work.
First published in 2025, „This is Chaos“ stands as a significant contribution to the ongoing development of the Chaos Magic Current. Drawing from the anarchic spirit and visionary depth of Carroll’s earlier works, and filled with essays by some of the most respected chaos magic workers who are redefining magic for the modern practitioner, it pushes further into unexplored territories of magical theory and practice.
The book merges conceptual precision with aesthetic symbolism, and Hagen von Tulien’s illustrations play a crucial role in manifesting this synthesis – serving not only as visual anchors, but as active magical constructs.
It is an opportunity to engage directly with the aesthetic and symbolic language that shapes one of the most dynamic currents in contemporary magical thought.
This presentation is an homage to the living, mutating force of the Chaos Current – a field of continual experimentation, transgression, and reinvention.
Bio
Hagen von Tulien, originally from Berlin, Germany, is a contemporary artist and practitioner of the occult. With about forty years of intense magical theory and practice, he has specialized in creating art as an expression and manifestation of magical states of awareness and its use as an esoteric tool.
His creative endeavors encompass a diverse range of media, including pen and ink, paper cutting, collage, and digital formats.
Hagen was forever following his spiritual and occult vocation. This resulted in his interest and engagement in diverse esoteric and hermetic traditions. He delved deeply into realms of knowledge and occulture, including various systems of yoga, and most Western magical traditions and orders.
During the 1980s he came in contact with the current of Chaos Magic, which never ceased to attract and fascinate him ever since. Throughout the 1990s Hagen was a key figure in the Chaos-Magical Pact of the Illuminates of Thanateros (I.O.T.), serving as its section head for Germany.
Apart from Chaos Magic, he dedicates his time to the study and practice of numerous other occult systems, approaches, and paths.
Hagen also holds the esteemed title of Master-Initiate within the Fraternitas Saturni (F.S.), serves as an empowered adept in the Voudon Gnostic Current (a member of O.T.O.A./L.C.N.), and holds the position of Gnostic Bishop in the Ecclesia Gnostica Spiritualis (EGS).
Hagen propagates the ideas, approaches, methods and techniques of Chaos Magic, mostly in private teachings and rituals, as well as in public lectures and practical seminars, using the core principles of Chaos Magic in alignment with the modern era.
For Hagen von Tulien, magic and art serve as the foundational pillars upon which his life and experiences are constructed.
