UPG and roots
The videos in the series “UPG and Roots” are the result of an exploration of aesthetic and spiritual intersections, ritual performances in spaces of natural sacredness, calling to an animistic memory through the lens of an Unverified Personal Gnosis. The works are created from recordings of Zatanio Arr’s performances in natural locations in Chile, geographies and landscapes that call for a deeper exploration of the spiritual roots of the territories we inhabit. These recordings were edited, mixed, and assembled by Mauro R. with the supervision of Mauricio Riquelme Rojas. Here, Zatanio, Mauro R., and Mauricio correspond to three personalities among others with whom the artist has developed his work over time, orthonyms and heteronyms this time revealed in the interweaving of an ancestral mythical horizon of the past ahead with dreamlike elements permeated by a dark psychedelia. Through the exhibition of these works, the viewer is invited to allow themselves to be carried away by the internal logic of the audiovisuals and what they insinuate.
Bio
Mauricio Riquelme Rojas/ Zatanio Arr. Transdisciplinary artist based in Chile. Ritual performer, poet, and co-podcaster of Parajes siniestros. My work is conceived from darkness, understood as a sacred space where the roots that house the ancestors are woven. In this sense, I am a practitioner of the de-Westernization of the arts.
For more than 20 years, I have used a policy of heteronyms under which I have circulated my creations and contributions in different spheres of expression. I have developed an ongoing work in different areas of contemporary arts and culture, participating in artistic, curatorial, and research practices, often in the form of collaborative experiences that integrate writing, sound, and visuals, currently in the connection between art and spirituality.
