We Are Whirling Through Space – The Occulture of Early Electronic Music
While the esoteric influences on the musicians since the seventies is common knowledge, this connection dates back to the beginnings of electronic music. The first experimental tape piece, created in 1944, was based on a recording of an exorcism, and many of the pioneers of the new music looked to esoteric concepts for inspiration and to understand what they were working with. This talk provides an introduction to the esoteric aspects of the work of musician/technicians from the first decades of magnetic tape recording, including Halim el-Dabh, Daphnie Oram, and Bebe & Louis Barron.
