Walking the Dikenga

The intent behind this photo exhibition is to offer the sincere seeker a glimpse into the inner world of a working Munanso—a house of Palo Mayombe. It also serves as a pictorial diary of my personal journey into this profound tradition.

These images evoke mystery, beauty, and the gravity of the path, reflecting both the visible and invisible dimensions of the work.

At the heart of Kongo religious and philosophical iconography is the Dikenga, a symbol of the cyclical nature of existence. This body of work reflects my own progression toward Tukula—the stage of maturity, deep understanding, and sacred responsibility. As one of the four cardinal points on the Dikenga, Tukula marks the culmination of growth, where knowledge, action, and accountability align in service to the spirits and the community.

Bio

I have been exploring and deepening my spirituality since early adulthood, beginning with Western-oriented systems and worldviews. Over time, I found my true home in animist practices and philosophy.

Three years ago, I was initiated into Palo Mayombe, in lineage of Bejuco Nfinda Nsasi Moanafilo Batalla Saca Empeño under Tata Eric Colon. Today, I am a Tata Nkisi, committed to sharing the beauty of this tradition with curious and sincere seekers, and to offering healing wherever I can.
